This is a butterfly which my sisters and I raised from a caterpillar.
Last year, when we were out biking, we found a large caterpillar crossing the road. Feeling sorry for it, we brought it home. Overnight, it spun itself into a cocoon which we took care of during the fall, winter and spring. We rolled it up in cotton, put it in a cardboard box and put it in a shed we have close to our house, so it wouldn't freeze. This June, a moth hatched from the cocoon. And what a beautiful moth it was! The same day as t hatched, we let it go at dusk. It flew away over the meadows across the street, toward the forest nearby where we once found it. After investigating it a little, we found out that it is an Elephant Hawk-Moth (Allmän snabelsvärmare in Swedish), Deilephila elpenor. It is so beautiful ^^* I took the pictures of the moth sitting on my sister ~hettlz's hand. |
